The Airco Plating Site occupies approximately two acres and is the location of an active electroplating business that has operated since the mid-1950's. The Site is located in a predominantly industrial/commercial area about one mile northeast of the Miami International Airport. However, there is a trailer park located about 300 feet south of the Site. Soil and groundwater contamination resulted from the operation of percolation ponds as well as other waste handling practices. The soil and groundwater are contaminated with metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The specific contaminants include cadmium, chromium, perchloroethene, cis-1,2 dichloroethene, and vinyl chloride. The groundwater contamination has impacted a small area of the Biscayne Aquifer, which lies underneath the Site. The Biscayne Aquifer is considered a "sole source aquifer" and is the only source of drinking water for several counties, including Dade County.
