general electric co. (spokane apparatus service shop)

E 4323 MISSION AV

This five-acre site, located in Spokane, Washington, included General Electric’s (GE’s) industrial service shop. From 1961 until 1980, GE cleaned, repaired transformers, and stored transformer oils and electric-related equipment. Some of the equipment and transformers contained polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) which were released into a dry well during steam cleaning. The soil and on-site groundwater are contaminated with PCBs. About 200,000 people live within three miles of the site. The site overlies the aquifer which provides the area’s drinking water. Site Responsibility: This site is being addressed through state and potentially responsible parties' actions.
