NORTH CHERRY RD
The 4.5-acre site is located next to U.S. Highway 21 (Cherry Road) and Farlow Street in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina. The foundation of the former chemical company building remains on site. The southern portion of the site includes a parking lot and a commercial business. Vegetation and woods cover the northern portion of the site, which includes a campsite area where people live. U.S. Highway 21 (Cherry Road) and the former Rock Hill Mall border the site to the south. Commercial businesses border the site to the west. Residences and an unnamed stream border the site to the north. A shopping plaza borders the site to the east. The site’s broader surroundings include residential and commercial land uses. The Leonard Chemical Company, Inc. Superfund site is located northwest of the site. From 1960 to 1964, the Rock Hill Chemical Company operated a distilling and recovery facility for paint solvents and textile dye products. Operations stored paint sludges, textile dye products, still bottoms and other wastes generated during the reclamation process and placed these materials directly onto the ground. In 1964, a fire at the facility caused drums of oil and chemicals to explode and release their contents. Following the fire, operations ended at the site. In 1972, First Federal Savings Bank bought a portion of the property. In 1984, the bank began construction of a branch office on the property. In 1990, EPA listed the site on the NPL. The site is vacant and not in use.
