The 4-acre site is located on State Highway 48 (Bluff Road), 10 miles south of Columbia in Richland County, South Carolina. The site includes a heavily wooded area and a cleared area used for various industrial and commercial purposes. Forested land used for hunting and timber production borders the site to the north, west and south. State Highway 48 (Bluff Road) and the Westinghouse Nuclear Fuels Facility border the site to the east. The site’s broader surroundings include rural and forested land. The nearest residence is located one mile from the site. A manufacturing facility first operated at the site. Beginning in 1975, the Columbia Organic Chemical Company stored, recycled and disposed of chemical wastes at the site. From 1976 to 1982, South Carolina Recycling and Disposal, Inc. (SCRDI) continued these operations at the site. Operations included storing waste chemicals in drums and small containers on site. In 1983, EPA listed the site on the NPL. The site is not in use.
