The Pohatcong Valley Groundwater Contamination Site (Site) involves primarily tetrachloroethylene (TCE), and perchloroethylene (PCE), contamination of the Kittatinny Limestone Aquifer underlying the Pohatcong Valley. The aquifer serves as the sole source of drinking water for public water systems and private parties in the area. The entire Site area is approximately nine (9) miles long by approximately one to one and a half (1 - 1.5) miles wide. The total acreage of the groundwater TCE and PCE groundwater plumes is approximately 2,746 acres. The two plumes begin at separate source areas in the OU1 area, and comingle in the aquifer. The TCE plume is the substantially larger plume extending throughout the valley. The PCE plume is mostly limited to the OU1 portion of the Site. Due to its size and complexity, EPA has divided the Site into three operable units, referred to as OU1, OU2, and OU3. OU1 includes portions of Washington Borough, Washington Township, and Franklin Township up to the Village of Broadway, at approximately Asbury Broadway Road, and encompasses approximately 5,600 acres. The OU2 Study Area is immediately downgradient of OU1, and includes portions of Franklin and Greenwich Townships. The OU3 Study Area covers the former American National Can (ANC) facility, now owned by Albea Americas, Inc., and immediately adjacent areas, within the borough of Washington, and includes the identified source areas of contamination for the Site's TCE contaminated groundwater. Site Responsibility : This site is being addressed through Federal, State, and county actions.
