COUNTY RD 1103
The site is located on State Road (SR) 1103 in Richmond County, North Carolina, approximately one mile east of the Pee Dee River and 1.6 miles southwest of Cordova. The site includes two separate, independently owned parcels of land: a 40-acre area owned by the Macon family and a 1-acre area owned by the Dockery family. The Dockery property is located approximately 2,640 feet north of the Macon property entrance, on the west side of SR 1103. Undeveloped land and agricultural land border the site. Site surroundings are mostly agricultural. There are also a few homes in the area. A waste oil recycling and antifreeze manufacturing facility operated at the site from 1979 to 1982. From 1979 through 1981, Mr. Charles Macon operated a waste oil disposal and recycling plant and an antifreeze manufacturing facility at the site. In 1981, Mr. Macon leased the recycling plant to C&M Oil Distributors, which operated the plant until 1982. Operations stored waste oils from plant operations in 11 unlined ponds, nine above-ground tanks and two tanks on the Macon property and in one unlined pond on the Dockery property. Waste stored in ponds overflowed onto the surrounding land. Both properties also received drums containing wastes. Operations at the site ended in 1982. In 1987, EPA listed the site on the NPL. Residential and agricultural land uses remain on site. People also use the site for recreational purposes such as hunting and fishing.
