The 72-acre Marion (Bragg) Dump Superfund site is located just outside of Marion, Indiana, which has a population of about 31,000. The area is relatively flat with the Mississinewa River bordering the site on the east and the north. A cemetery lies to the west, and a private, open area lies to the south. The nearest residents are about one-quarter mile away. Area residents depend on groundwater from private and municipal wells for their water supply. The Marion (Bragg) Dump was formerly a gravel pit. A 15 acre pond is found in the middle of the landfill and is connected to the upper aquifer; some wastes were disposed of along the edges of the pond. Some of the northern portion of the site is within the 100-year floodplain of the Mississinewa River. The land was leased for the disposal of various wastes by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and the Bragg Construction Company. The Bragg disposal facility, which accepted municipal and other wastes, was closed in 1975, and the RCA facility closed around 1970. A transfer station was opened at the site by Waste Reduction Systems in 1975, and it closed in 1977. The dump contains approximately 1,100,000 cubic yards of wastes, some of which are hazardous, including solvents, plasticizers, lead, and cadmium. Site Responsibility The Marion (Bragg) Dump site is being addressed through federal, state, and potentially responsible party (PRP) actions.
