218 INDUSTRIAL PARK DRIVE

The 312-acre Eagle Zinc Superfund site is located in a mixed commercial/industrial and residential area on the northeast side of Hillsboro in Montgomery County, Illinois. Active industrial operations ceased at Eagle Zinc in 2003. Currently, there are 23 structures on the site. Recent sampling results indicated the presence of high levels of lead contamination in area soil and in the structures that could pose a human health risk. The Eagle Zinc site extends from Smith Road south to an unnamed tributary to the Middle Fork of Shoal Creek. Industrial Drive extends north and south along much of the site's eastern boundary. To the north are Smith Street, a small industrial facility called Hayes Abrasives, a golf course, and farm fields. The site is zoned commercial/industrial and Hillsboro has indicated interest in acquiring the property for use as an industrial park. EPA placed the Eagle Zinc site on the National Priorities List in 2007.
