OLD TURNPIKE RD
The Old Southington Landfill Site (Site) is an 11-acre landfill that was owned and operated by the Town of Southington (Town) from 1920 until 1967 as a municipal disposal area. The Site received residential, commercial, and industrial waste. The northern part of the landfill typically received residential waste and construction type debris from nearby construction sites. The southern part of the landfill typically received commercial and industrial waste. Trucks from Solvents Recovery Service were seen dumping sludge materials into Semi-Solid Disposal Area 1 (SSDA1) and Semi-Solid Disposal Area 2 (SSDA2), located on the southern part of the landfill close to the edge of Old Turnpike Road; at the end of each day, those areas would be covered with a thin layer of soil. Landfill closure procedures included compacting loose refuse, covering the Site with at least 2 feet of clean fill material, and reseeding with grass. Between 1973 and 1980, the landfill was subdivided and sold into residential and commercial parcels. Four residential homes were built on the northern end of the landfill and six commercial buildings were built on the southern portion. The Site abuts a residential area located to the north and east, and abuts commercial property to the west and south. Black Pond is part of the Site and is adjacent to the landfill's northeast boundary. The Site is located approximately 1,800 feet east of the Quinnipiac River and approximately 700 feet southeast of the former municipal Well No. 5, which was installed in 1971 by the Town of Southington Water Department as a public water supply. In 1979, the municipal well was permanently closed because groundwater analyses conducted by CT Department of Public Health indicated the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at levels that exceeded State standards. Currently everyone within a two mile radius of the Site is connected to municipal water from another municipal water source that is regularly tested and shown to be clean.
